What’s the Difference Between Perfume, EDT and Cologne?
The word “fragrance” is a unisex, generic term used for perfume or cologne. Fragrances come in many forms and are called different names but generally fall into a few recognizable categories
Eau Fraiche – The most diluted version of fragrance, usually with 1% – 3% perfume oil in alcohol and water. Usually lasts for less than an hour. Not all fragrance brands offer a Eau Fraiche as an option. One that does is Versace Man Eau Fraiche.
Cologne (Eau de Cologne) – This term is used frequently (Inappropriately used in most cases) and refers to any men’s fragrance these days. We may say “Sauvage cologne for men” in a general a sense, but Sauvage comes in EDT, EDP and Elixer and is not a true cologne. Actual cologne (Eau de Cologne) is normally made up of 2% – 4% perfume oils in alcohol and water. Its common to last for about 2 hours. It’s also the oldest term for perfume, used in North America for masculine scents. It’s light and fresh, and can be sweet or musky.
EDP Vs EDT – Which is Better
If you’re wondering the difference between an EDT and an EDP, we can help explain it. If you’re wondering which is better… well we’ll just say that one is a little different from the other. EDT (Eau de Toilette) – A light spray composition with 5% – 15% pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. Usually lasts for about 3 hours. This is modestly priced and is the most popular concoction of fragrance. Although EDP (see below) is technically stronger, EDT can be your best bet all things considered. This is especially true for men’s fragrances. EDP (Eau de Parfum) – Historically genderless, used to describe both men’s and women’s fragrances. The best term used to describe a fragrance. Contains 15% – 20% pure perfume essence and lasts for about 5 to 8 hours.
Pure Perfume (Extrait de Parfum) – Extrait de Parfum also sometimes called pure perfume or simply perfume, has the highest concentration of perfume oil – typically between 20-40%. It is very concentrated and long-lasting so a little goes a long way. This is the most concentrated and expensive of all fragrance options. It is slightly oilier and a single application of perfume can last up to 24 hours.
